The Merc encourages its staff and volunteers to develop their dreams into reality. For Barista Paige, that dream included a whole lot of “soft plastics.” Paige is blown away by the amount of soft plastics that end up in land-fills and decided to do something about it. She contacted over 90 businesses and residents and encouraged them to collect their bags, shrink wraps and other like items. Local recycling contractors don’t take those things so she collected it all up and drove for hours to bring thousands of pounds to a place that could recycle them. This herculean effort got refined by raising money for a manual baler and contacting an organization that would buy the bales.
Paige is working with public and private stakeholders to take this effort to the next level – a large, efficient, state-of-the art Materials Recovery Facility that provides county-wide recycling services for those items that would have ended up on landfills and ultimately in our soil and water.
